How I Managed Lockdown Through My Passion

Shehnai Guy Ankit Patel

I was born in the UK, Leicester to be exact. Like many Indian families, I lived near my cousins and grew very close with them. I believe that is one of many reasons why I am immensely connected with Indian culture.

Often, people would question me about why I am so deeply connected with Indian values, despite being the part of western culture for such a long period of time. To answer to everyone I'd like to say that,

“We need to be proud of our ancestors and there is nothing to conceal in it.”

There has been a blend of cultures through generations, which in my opinion is the gratitude in the form of various diversities that we adopt.

Talking about my profession, apart from my “Music love”; I own an Internet marketing firm. My company is called K3 marketing and I have been running it for more than 15 years now.

Many people don't believe me when I say that “being social” is my least priority given the fact that my entire profession is based on “Social Media”. I would rather go with my mantra of “Putting my phone down and turning off Netflix” and I have observed that I am left with a huge amount of time for learning and exploring things that I love.

My journey or the love for Shehnai initiated when I heard this instrument being played in “Bhajans” for the very first time. I started my page on Instagram named “Shehnai guy” last year and was amazed to see the love that people showered upon me from all around the world. I assume that most of you were not aware of such talent and unique skill that still exists.

Being an Indian and playing Shehnai in the west was a difficult task as Shehnai is an instrument that is dead in India itself however, its uniqueness enticed me.

I am a person who appreciates all forms of art; not just technical or musical but every craftwork, physics, history, politics, basketball, etc. Disney and Harry Potter have always been my source of fascination. I have a Gemini symbolic Horoscope, who generally are found to be curious to learn and explore anything and everything in them. Despite being a firm believer about these signs, I would still suggest that,

“Don't be a Jack of all traits, rather focus on just one”

Taking my own example I was always a keyboard player but, credit the lockdown I turned that down so as to focus hard on “Shehnai vs. other things.”  I began experimenting more on my channel.

I am surely going to put my 100% efforts to provide justice to music in my life and I hope that going ahead will shape my life for the better.

One thing that always has kept me going is that,

Life is very short, we don’t know if tomorrow exists for us, or what’s going to happen then, or where we will be in the next 5 years.

However, we definitely know what our hobbies, our passion, and our goals are.

Focussing on the goals and learning every art form must be aspired. And to never forget the aspect of BALANCE in, “What you love to do” and “What you do as a profession for living", is the formula to Profound Satisfaction and Happiness.
